Question 1 of 10
1. Question
Addie is drafting in the Top 8
of a Regional Championship, being run at Competitive REL. This is a
timed and called draft. Addie selects a card from their current booster
and places it across their current pile of drafted cards so that it is
easily distinguishable from the rest. Still within the time limit for
this pick, they shuffle the pack once, then pick up the first card and
draft a different card instead. The judge notices and pauses the draft.
What infraction has Addie committed, if any, and the corresponding
penalty?

Once
a card has been removed from the pack and placed on their drafted pile,
it may not be returned to the pack (MTR 7.7). Doing so is a Tournament
Error – Limited Procedure Violation, the penalty for which is a Warning
(IPG 3.6).

Pregame
procedures, which include mulligan decisions, may be completed before
the round timer officially starts (MTR 2.3). Alex has committed no
infraction and should be issued no penalty.
Question 3 of 10
3. Question
At a Regular REL event, Amir
is playing against Nan. Time is called and Amir states that they believe
that match will end in a draw. Nan rolls a six-sided die, saying that
the highest roll will determine the match winner. Amir calls a judge and
explains what happened. Upon interview, Nan says that they do this all
the time at their local game store and that they did not know this was
against the rules. The Head Judge believes Nan’s explanation. What is
the appropriate resolution to this situation?

Rules
Determining
match outcomes by outside-the-game methods falls under General Unwanted
Behaviors unless the player knows that it is against the rules (JAR
General Unwanted Behaviors). Once the player has been informed of this
fact, further violations are Serious Problems. Since Amir reported the
issue immediately, they should not receive a penalty.
Question 4 of 10
4. Question
Anand has defeated Nicky in
game two of their match in Swiss rounds at a Players Tour Qualifier. The
match score is now 1-1. While sideboarding and shuffling for game
three, time is called. What happens?

Rules
Once
time is called, no new games should begin (MTR 2.5). In Swiss rounds,
matches are able to end in draws (MTR 2.1, 2.5). The “sudden death” rule
is only for single-elimination rounds, where draws are not allowed (MTR
2.5).
Question 5 of 10
5. Question
During a Competitive REL tournament, Ariel casts Shimmer of Possibility. After selecting a card, Ariel shuffles the
remaining cards around a few times, then puts them on the bottom of
their library. What infraction has Ariel committed, if any, and the
corresponding penalty?
1.

Rules
Rules
Shimmer
of Possibility instructs the player to put the remaining cards on the
bottom of their library in a random order. Ariel shuffled the cards but
did not present the cards to their opponent for additional randomization
as required (MTR 3.10). The infraction is Tournament Error –
Insufficient Shuffling and Ariel should be issued a Warning (IPG 3.9).
Question 6 of 10
6. Question
Ash is playing in a
Competitive REL tournament and has received one Tournament Error – Slow
Play infraction, with a penalty of Warning. After which of the following
additional infractions would Ash receive a Game Loss? (Choose any/all
that apply)

Tournament
Error infractions that have Warning as a base penalty are upgraded on
the second occurrence in the same category (IPG 3). Ash will receive a
Game Loss if they receive another Slow Play infraction during this day
of the tournament (IPG 3, 3.3). Tournament Error – Decklist Problem is
always a Game Loss (IPG 3.4). Tournament Error – Communication Policy
Violation, Tournament Error – Insufficient Shuffling, and Game Play
Error – Hidden Card Error are all Warnings at baseline (IPG 2.3, 3.7,
3.9).
Question 7 of 10
7. Question
Amory is playing against Nikita in a Competitive REL tournament. Nikita has controlled a Narset, Parter of Veils for several turns and it currently has three loyalty. Amory casts Foresee, which Nikita does not respond to. Amory scries
four, putting three cards on the bottom of their library and one card on
top. Amory then draws two cards and passes the turn. Nikita untaps and
draws a card for their turn, then as they are about to active Narset’s
-2 loyalty ability, they realize that Amory should not have drawn the
two cards for Foresee. Both players call a judge. What is the
appropriate infraction and fix?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Rules
Rules
Amory
drew two cards that they were not allowed to draw and Nikita controls
the continuous effect modifying the game rule that made the action
illegal, so Amory has committed Game Play Error – Game Rule Violation
and not Game Play Error – Hidden Card Error (IPG 2.3, 2.5). For this
same reason, it is appropriate for Nikita to receive Game Play Error –
Game Rule Violation as well (IPG 2.5). None of the listed partial fixes
for Game Rule Violation apply to a player who has drawn cards illegally
(IPG 2.5). The only potential remedies are a full backup or leave the
game state as-is.
Question 8 of 10
8. Question
According to the IPG, which of
the following is an appropriate reason for a Head Judge to deviate from
the MTR and/or IPG? (Choose any/all that apply)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Rules
Rules
Judges
are expected to uphold and apply policy documents fairly and
consistently as much as possible. The IPG dictates that the only
situations where a deviation is appropriate are in significant and
exceptional circumstances, such as a table collapsing, or where there is
no applicable philosophy for guidance (IPG 1). The REL, round of the
tournament, age, or experience level of the players involved are not
valid reasons for a deviation from policy.
Question 9 of 10
9. Question
Anh is playing against Noam in a Competitive REL tournament. Anh currently has an Arclight Phoenix and six other cards in their graveyard and controls a Thing in the Ice with three ice counters on it. During Anh’s first main phase, they cast Consider, remove an ice counter from their Thing in the Ice, choose to leave the card on top, and draw it. Then Anh casts Treasure Cruise. In response, Noam casts Mystical Dispute targeting Treasure Cruise. Finally, Anh casts Spell Pierce targeting Mystical Dispute. Noam does not respond.
In quick succession, Anh removes two ice counters from Thing in the
Ice, puts their Spell Pierce and Treasure Cruise in the graveyard,
transforms Thing in the Ice, puts their Arclight Phoenix on the
battlefield, draws three cards, and says, “Swing for 10.” Noam calls a
judge. What infraction, if any, has Anh committed?
1.
2.

Rules
Rules
Players
must demonstrate awareness of triggers at the first time that they
would affect the game in a visible fashion (IPG 2.1). For Thing in the
Ice, this means removing the ice counter when the trigger would resolve.
Anh removes the ice counters from the Treasure Cruise trigger and the
Spell Pierce trigger before taking any actions that advance the game
state past the point where those triggers should have resolved. Anh does
not immediately transform Thing in the Ice, but there is no information
or advantage gained from transforming it slightly later in the
sequence, so this falls under Out-of-Order Sequencing (MTR 4.3).
Transforming Thing in the Ice is part of the trigger that removes the
last ice counter, so Anh has already demonstrated awareness of it by
removing the last counter (CR 113.2c, IPG 2.1, MTR 4.5). Anh has put the
Treasure Cruise in the graveyard early, moved the Arclight Phoenix from
the graveyard before explicitly moving to the combat phase, and drawn
his cards from Treasure Cruise after moving the Arclight Phoenix, which
is not the technically correct order of those actions. However, as they
were done as a single block of actions that would have been legal in the
correct order and the resulting game state is legal and clearly
understood, these also fall under Out-of-Order Sequencing (MTR 4.3). Anh
has committed no infraction.
Question 10 of 10
10. Question
Angel is playing against Noel at a Competitive REL tournament. Angel casts Dig Through Time and Noel has no responses. Angel picks up four
cards from their deck, looks at them and sets them in one pile. Then
Angel picks up another five cards from their deck and changes their
order a few times before realizing their error. Angel calls a judge,
keeping the five cards separate from the first four and their hand. What
is the appropriate infraction, penalty, and fix?

Drawing
Extra Cards is an obsolete infraction that no longer exists. Angel has
committed an error in the game that cannot be corrected by only publicly
available information, so the infraction is Game Play Error – Hidden
Card Error (IPG 2.3). Since the two portions of the Dig Through Time set
were kept distinct, we should apply the Hidden Card Error to the
smallest set possible. The set affected by the error contains more cards
than it is supposed to contain. Angel should reveal the set of five
cards to Noel, who will select two cards. Those cards will be shuffled
into the random portion of Angel’s library (IPG 2.3).
