  2. 2. Question

April is playing against Natalie at a Competitive REL Legacy tournament. Natalie is currently the monarch and controls a Palace Jailer that is exiling April's Spellwild Ouphe. April attacks with Questing Beast, which Natalie cannot block. Both players mark down the four life loss for Natalie, then April passes the turn. Natalie untaps and draws a card, then April points out that they were supposed to become the monarch and draw a card. Both players call a judge. Assuming no cheating intent, what is the appropriate way to handle this situation?

The monarch designation changes through a triggered ability that is controlled by whomever is currently the monarch (CR 721.2). Since the trigger results in a visible change to the game state (as the current monarch is status information that must be announced and tracked), Natalie has missed this trigger by failing to demonstrate awareness of it (MTR 4.1, IPG 2.1). Natalie is the controller of the trigger since they are currently the monarch, and ceasing to be the monarch is generally detrimental, so missing this trigger comes with a Warning (IPG 2.1). April has the option to put the monarch-changing trigger on the stack now (IPG 2.1). If April does, Palace Jailer’s trigger condition will be met, so that ability will trigger immediately. The IPG does not allow for a backup in this situation, so the other monarch trigger will not happen as that time has already passed (CR 721.2, IPG 2.1).

  3. 3. Question

Arcturus is playing a match against Nadir during the Swiss rounds of a Professional REL event. They finish game two with the match score now tied 1-1. Time is called in the round before the players begin game three. Which of these best explains what happens?

  4. 4. Question

Nico is playing against Argus at a Competitive REL tournament and controls REST IN PEACE. Argus cycles a LONELY SANDBAR and puts it into the graveyard. On Nico's turn, Nico draws a card and then notices that the Lonely Sandbar should be in exile and calls a judge. What is the appropriate infraction, penalty, and fix for this situation?

  5. 5. Question

Alonzo is playing against Nico at a Competitive REL tournament. Alonzo wins the die roll and chooses to play first. Once they present their decks, a judge takes them for a deck check. Alonzo's deck is 59 cards with a 16 card sideboard. One copy of Lightning Bolt is in Alonzo's sideboard when it should be in the main deck. Nico's deck has four foil Aether Vial that are noticeably curved more than the rest of the deck, and can be easily distinguished. What are the appropriate infractions, penalties, and fixes for this situation?

    • 1.
    • 2.
    • 3.
    • 4.
    • 5.
    Rules

Alonzo has presented an invalid number of cards and it was caught during a deckcheck, so Alonzo receives a Game Loss for Deck Problem (IPG 3.5 ). Nico’s pattern of markings would provide substantial advantage if noticed, so Nico also receives a Game Loss for their Marked Cards infraction (IPG 3.8). If simultaneous Game Loss penalties are issued to each player, they do not affect the match score (IPG 1.1).

  6. 6. Question

At a Professional REL event, Alex takes a mulligan but begins the game without putting a card on the bottom of their library. A few turns into the game, Alex's opponent Narset counts the number of cards in Alex's hand and calls a judge. What is the appropriate infraction, penalty, and fix?

  7. 7. Question

At a Competitive REL tournament, Akali casts Dig Through Time which resolves. Akali takes four cards off their library with their left hand, looks at them, and sets them down in front of them. Then, they count out four more cards off their library face-down in a second pile, but before they look at them, Notan notices this and says, "That's too many! Judge!" The judge determines that no cards were known in Akali's library prior to the Dig Through Time and that Akali simply made a mistake. What is the appropriate infraction, penalty, and fix for this situation?

    • 1.
    • 2.
    • 3.
    • 4.
    • 5.
    Rules

Cards that have not yet been seen are not considered part of a new set, so Akali has not committed any infraction (IPG 1.5, IPG 2.2, IPG 2.3). We always operate on the smallest set possible when correcting any error.

Apton asks Nicole "Would you take $150 in store credit and give me the invite? I really want to go to the RC!" Nicole responds, "I'll give you the invite if you give me all $175 of the store credit." Apton says "Deal!" Assuming the store hosting the tournament has no issues with this redistribution of store credit, which of the following is the appropriate resolution of this situation?
